Look What I Made: Phenonmenal Woman Necklace

UPDATE: This piece is now available on Ciarrai Studios. You can find it here:

This is a piece I have been VERY excited about for some time. It is inspired by the poem “Phenomenal Woman” by Maya Angelou (one of my favorite poets). For those of you who haven’t read the poem, it is a beautiful declaration of self-love and empowerment that every woman should know by heart. You can read it here.

The Phenomenal Woman Necklace is handcrafted from a rusted iron pendant of a woman raising her arms in joy and celebration and a beaded necklace made of crazy lace agate gemstone beads in rich shades of blue and brown with copper accents.

There is so much to love about this necklace but there are some specific things that really strike me. First of, I love the blues, browns, rust and copper colors working together to suggest an almost elemental connection with Earth, Sky and Water.

Also, in a piece that is inspired by a woman’s assurance of beauty despite not being the conventional ideal of beauty, there is something really cool about the focal piece being made of rusted iron. It is not something that we tend to think of as beautiful. It has been aged and marked by its experiences and could be viewed as something to throw away but here it is, not only included in something beautiful but as the focal point of it.

I am so happy with this piece that I am going to have to make more than one. The Phenomenal Woman is one of those pieces that if I saw it on someone else’s Etsy store, I would HAVE to have it. The only way I am not going to be heartbroken when someone buys it is if I have one of my own.

About Ciarrai

Hi. My name is Kerry but here online I tend to go by the Gaelic version of my name, Ciarrai. I am a woman in my mid-30's who lives on Long Island, NY, with my husband, Rob, several guitars, a Nikon D40, more yarn, beads and books than I care to admit to and a cat who has a million nicknames and quite a few theme songs. I have a B.A. in Psychology and have recently returned to college to pursue a teaching degree so that I can eventually get a job as a High School English teacher. In addition to my major obsessions (Reading, Beading, Knitting, Music and Photography), I also enjoy playing Board Games, going to Renaissance Faires, Museums and Broadway Musicals.
